Right from the on-set, ACWICT has been actively involved with the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) process. The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) is a multi-stakeholder United Nations gathering that seeks to develop global policy framework that will guide the development of the information society.

During the first Preparatory meeting of the WSIS process held in Geneva, Switzerland in July 2002, ACWICT underscored the need to ensure that the emerging global action plan on the information society contributes to the goals of peace, equality and development including plans to encourage innovative ICT applications in conflict resolution and peace building processes.
ACWICT in collaboration with other Women’s organizations from the Eastern Africa Region formed the WSIS-Gender Caucus (Africa Region), a group that worked to ensure that African women’s issues and concerns were incorporated in the WSIS process.

The WSIS GC Africa Region group in collaboration with AITEC-Africa and the Government of Tanzania organized a regional women and ICT conference dubbed ‘Women & ICT Opportunities and Challenges on the Road to Tunis’ in October 2004 in Arusha, Tanzania. The outcomes informed the final WSIS process in Tunisia in 2005.
