Maasai girl singing The African Centre for Women, Information and Communications Technology (ACWICT) is implementing the Gender and Post Election Peace Building initiative funded by the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM).
ACWICT is among three partners in the Media and Public Communication cluster. The cluster is charged with generating and disseminating peace messages aimed at healing rifts caused by post election violence that rocked the country after the disputed presidential elections in December 2007.
ACWICT’s participation in this initiative comes upon a backdrop of its previous work with UNIFEM as an implementing partner in the Gender and Governance Programme (GGP) Phase II. ACWICT will deploy an ICT strategy in generating and disseminating peace building messages.
The objectives of the Gender and Post Election Peace Building Initiative are:
- To promote women’s participation and influence within the mediation and justice processes
- To improve gender justice within national responses and budgeting to early recovery and protection efforts and in particular to survivors of VAW and displaced women.
- To enhance women’s short term economic recovery, security and rights.
There are various partner organizations implementing the peace building initiative throughout the country. All of them are addressing critical gender issues within key areas of the crisis namely:
- Humanitarian/Relief
- Protection/Gender Based Violence
- Early Recovery/Livelihoods
- Mediation/Justice Issues
- Peace Building
